LAY CARMELITE COMMUNITY
of Rhode Island
Community
Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.
Isaiah 2:3
All the members of our Lay Carmelite communities are expected to attend formal monthly meetings. These meetings provide opportunities for all chapter members to develop solid Carmelite family ties as a part of our continued formation. In addition to a short business meeting, there is a set period for community prayer, sharing, fellowship and a book study related to Carmelite spirituality.

Along with faithful attendance at Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours is the heart of a Lay Carmelite's prayer life. Lay Carmelites commit to praying the Divine Office, or the Liturgy of the Hours, both through Morning and Evening Prayer. Lay Carmelites participate in this practice as it is the Prayer of the Church. In addition, Lay Carmelites meditate on the readings of Scripture using Lectio Divina which has been rediscovered as a way of growing in deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. This traditional prayer practice opens our hearts to hearing God through His living and breathing Word. A Lay Carmelite desires to practice living in God's presence in their ordinary daily lives by breathing Him in through His Word and out through His love.

Desiring to seek God more deeply by practicing Carmelite spirituality as a Lay Carmelite, strengthens individuals in their faith walk while forging a community bound together by the Holy Spirit in God's unity, support, and love. We are never alone within our Carmelite family!
